Society of The Black Rose

The Society of the Black Rose is a volunteer order within the Order of Confederate Rose to perpetuate the persona of a “War Between the States” widow at Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) functions, memorial services, grave dedications, etc.

Membership is open to any dues-paying member (no additional dues are required). Members should have complete period mourning attire.

Black attire represents mourning. A rose represents the love for the soldier and his family who paid the price of death for the Cause. These soldiers should NEVER be forgotten!

As Black Roses, portraying “ladies in mourning” at memorial services, etc., we are not only paying respect to the fallen soldier, but to the women who loved them and who lost loved ones fighting for a cause in which they so dearly believed.

To be a member of the Society of the Black Rose is an honor. With that honor comes the responsibility of portraying the widows, daughters, sisters, and mothers who grieved the death of our soldiers who fought so gallantly to protect our way of life. Being a Black Rose allows us to step back in time and feel the loss of those who have long since passed, fighting and defending our precious land.

We walk on hallowed ground at each cemetery memorial service we attend.

We preserve our heritage, and at the same time, we mourn the loss felt by each woman.

Black Roses feel the stirring of the spirits of those that we mourn. It is something that lives inside each of the women who are Black Roses.

Thorns are male members of the Society of the Black Roses. They assist and accompany the Black Roses during the ceremony.

The TNSOCR has a “Keeper of the Rite”. She is dedicated to teaching others how to present themselves as mourners and plans many of the memorial and dedication ceremonies across the state.

If you are a current TNSOCR member and you are interested in becoming a black rose, or if you are an SCV member and would desire ladies in mourning at one of your memorial services or dedications, please email: claudiatnsocr@gmail.com

We will forward your contact information to our “Keeper of the Rite” to contact you personally.
